Cathey Laird, the creative force behind Cathey Marie Designs, has been passionate about artistic expression since childhood. From yarn crafts and sewing to exploring new creative techniques, making has always been an important part of her life. When she discovered quilting, she quickly knew she had found her creative calling. 

In 2012, Cathey began working at a local quilt shop, marking the beginning of her journey as a quilt designer and pattern writer. Her designs were soon published through Checker Distributors, including more than 50 Cut Loose Press patterns. Her work has also been featured in numerous books and magazines, helping establish her as a respected designer within the quilting community. 

Cathey’s innovative spirit led her to create the Y Block Ruler™ in 2017, along with more than 50 patterns designed specifically to showcase its versatility. The ruler simplifies the construction of quilt blocks made with quarter-square triangle units by streamlining cutting, marking, and squaring—making precise results easier and more accessible for quilters. 

In 2018, Cathey was selected as a finalist in Craftsy’s Quilt Designer Fellowship. That recognition encouraged her to take the leap into full-time design and officially launch Cathey Marie Designs. 

Today, Cathey offers more than 100 quilt patterns, along with innovative rulers and templates designed to make quilting more approachable and enjoyable. She has had the opportunity to collaborate with respected industry brands, including Northcott, Banyan Batiks, Henry Glass, Blank, Studio-e, The Warm Company, and Aurifil Threads. 

Known for clear, easy-to-follow instructions and thoughtfully designed tools, Cathey is passionate about helping quilters of all skill levels feel confident and successful. Through her patterns, rulers, and templates, she gives quilters the tools they need to explore their creativity and bring their own ideas to life. 

For Cathey, the greatest reward is seeing what others create with her designs. Every pattern, ruler, and template is created with one simple goal: Bringing you clarity, confidence, and creativity through quilting products with clear, easy-to-follow instructions.
