How to Use the Quilt Binding Calculator

Please note: Calculations are based on a 40" usable width of fabric (WOF), with binding strips joined diagonally.
A little extra never hurts! Calculations are intended as a helpful guide. Fabric widths, cutting methods, binding techniques, and individual projects may vary. When purchasing fabric, consider allowing a little extra for cutting and piecing.
How Much Extra Binding Do I Need? It's helpful to have some additional binding beyond the exact perimeter of your quilt. The QBPN calculator includes an additional 10 inches to allow for joining the beginning and ending of your binding.
Understanding Your Results
WOF Strips refers to the number of strips you will cut across the usable width of your fabric.
Fabric Required tells you the minimum amount of yardage needed to cut those strips.
Recommended Purchase rounds the calculated amount up to a practical fabric-cut increment so you have enough fabric to complete your binding.
Your Binding Requirements
Calculations are based on a 40" usable width of fabric (WOF), with binding strips joined diagonally. We add 10" to the quilt perimeter for joining and finishing. For the recommended fabric purchase, we add 3" to the calculated fabric requirement and round up to the next 1/8 yard to provide additional allowance for cutting, squaring, shrinkage, and minor variations.
