Lib Expressions

Lise was born and raised in the charming town of Trois-Pistoles, Quebec, located on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River. At an early age, she discovered her passion for creating and sewing. A passion that led her to study fashion in Quebec City, to work as a tailor and seamstress for many of Canada’s major theatres, and to eventually create her own line of children’s clothing. After costume design and clothes confection, her undeniable talent and growing interest in the possibilities offered by fabric brought her to quilting. As time went by, her attraction to forms, colours and lighting in the creative process of textile art became her everyday motivation and she turned the page for good on the clothing industry. The call of creative freedom was too insistent to be repressed and ignored.

The use of textiles as canvas was the hint of challenge she needed to realize the ideas taking over her imagination. Quilt after quilt, her creative spirit was more and more geared towards the mastery of a clear and precise execution of needle and thread, today recognized as her distinctive signature. Her fascination with the harmonious combination of textiles found its source in her constant quest for calm, serenity and balance through each work of art. The texture and the colour of the medium are often the awaited epiphany leading to a new subject choice.

Even though Lise could never truly put her artistic approach into words, her evolution as an artist is irrefutable. She found a way to integrate semi-industrial sewing practices related to her professional past in a purely aesthetic sense, and to make the quilt her own as inspiration hits her. For Lise, precision, structure and intention must reconcile with space without restricting artistic expression.
