Paper Piecing Patterns

(28 products)
Paper piecing patterns, also known as foundation paper piecing, started around the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In paper piecing patterns, a template serves as a guide to stitch the fabric onto. The paper piecing or foundation paper serves as a stabilizer to maintain the shape of the block and is used to create intricate designs or complex shapes with ease and accuracy.

Gaining popularity in England in the late 18th century, an early example of paper piecing is the “Mosaic” or “English Paper Piecing” technique used to create quilts or other fabric projects.

The sewing machine came about and revolutionized the quilting process by making it more efficient in the 19th century. Throughout the 20th century, paper piecing was expanded on, and quilters grew their skillset and explored their creative needs with new patterns, in particular, mini quilts and quilt blocks.

Today, the art of paper piecing continues to thrive, supported by innovations such as pre-printed foundation papers and downloadable PDF patterns. Quilters, regardless of their expertise, now have access to an extensive array of paper piecing designs through online platforms, magazines, and books.
