Afternoon Delight is one of Sue Garmans favorite patterns. This wonderfully scrappy quilt is truly a delight to make with its combination of simple applique blocks and Double Nine-Patch blocks, and modified Shoo Fly blocks. Each month you will work on pieced and applique blocks, and in the final month you will assemble the blocks and add the outer border. The finished quilt measures 88-1/2 inches square.

A beautiful pattern with two of my favorites - needle turn applique and civil war reproduction fabrics. Definitely not a quick project, but the time and effort will be well worth it. Very detailed instructions for the needle turn applique but I think this quilt would be challenging for an applique beginner. Some small tips - for pins when pinning the applique pieces to the background, use the small sequin pins. They work great and won't get in your way. For circles, use Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Circles. And this works for me - leave the freezer paper on the applique piece as you sew it to the background. You will then have an "edge" to turn your fabric on. Leave a small space to gently remove the freezer paper with a small tweezer and then complete sewing the piece to the backgroud. (This should be easy.) Sad to learn that the designer of this pattern, Sue Garman, is no longer with us.
